How to Redesign a Website Without Losing SEO
A field-tested playbook for SEO-safe website migrations: crawl exports, redirect maps, staging QA, and the first 90 days after launch.

Why redesigns break SEO (and how to see it coming)
Traffic drops after a redesign are rarely random. They follow missing redirects, deleted revenue pages, or metadata rebuilt from scratch without a migration plan.
Google needs a clear signal that new URLs replace old ones. Without 301s, updated internal links, and stable intent on high-value pages, equity dissipates and rankings fall.
Step 1: Crawl and inventory every URL that matters
Export indexed URLs from Google Search Console and run a full site crawl. For each URL, record organic traffic, backlinks, and conversions from the last 12 months.
Flag thin or duplicate pages for consolidation. Protect URLs that drive revenue or rankings. Our redesign checklist guide uses the same inventory template on client projects.
Step 2: Build a redirect map before design approval
Map every old URL to its new destination. Use 301 redirects for moved pages. Use 410 only when a page should genuinely disappear.
Avoid redirect chains. Update internal links to point directly to final URLs. If you hire us for SEO website redesign, this spreadsheet is a core deliverable, not a launch-night panic task.
Step 3: Preserve content and metadata on winners
Keep title tags, headings, and body copy on high-performing pages unless you have a deliberate improvement strategy backed by data.
Recalculate canonical tags, hreflang, and schema before launch, not after traffic drops. Staging should mirror production redirect rules.
Step 4: Launch with Search Console watching
Submit an updated XML sitemap on launch day. Monitor Coverage and Page Indexing reports for 90 days.
Compare actual rankings and traffic against pre-launch baselines weekly for the first month. Fix indexation errors on priority URLs before chasing new content ideas.
